Gold Plated vs Gold Filled vs Oro Laminado: What Retailers Need to Know

Gold filled jewelry has a thick layer of karat gold, at least 1/20 of the piece's weight, bonded to a base metal. Gold plated jewelry has a much thinner electroplated layer. Vermeil is gold over sterling silver. Oro laminado is a Spanish-market term for laminated gold, usually a gold layer bonded to brass, and it has no single U.S. legal definition. Amafhha Jewels sells gold plated, oro laminado and 925 sterling silver jewelry, so this guide explains how each label works.

What is the difference between gold plated, gold filled, vermeil and oro laminado?

FTC: must be marked with fraction and karat, e.g. 1/20 14K GF

Gold plated (electroplate)

Brass, copper alloy or steel

FTC: at least 0.175 microns of karat gold to be called gold electroplate

Heavy gold electroplate

Base metal

At least 2.5 microns

FTC: minimum for the term heavy gold electroplate

Vermeil

Sterling silver (925)

At least 2.5 microns of gold, 10K or finer

FTC definition of vermeil

Oro laminado

Usually brass

Gold layer bonded to the base metal; thickness varies by maker

Not a U.S. legal category, so ask the supplier for specifications

Which lasts longest?

Gold filled generally wears longest because the gold layer is much thicker. Vermeil and heavy gold electroplate come next, and standard gold plating wears fastest. Real-life wear depends on skin chemistry, how often it is worn and how it is stored, so no type lasts a fixed number of years. Vermeil sits on sterling silver, which our guide to buying silver jewelry in bulk explains.

How can you tell what you are buying?

  • 1/20 14K GF means gold filled: the gold is 14 karat and makes up 1/20 of the total weight.
  • GP, GEP or HGE mean gold plated, gold electroplate and heavy gold electroplate. These are all plated, not filled.
  • 925 and GV together point to gold vermeil over sterling silver.
  • Ask the supplier for the base metal, the gold karat and the layer thickness or weight fraction.

How do you describe it honestly to customers?

Use the label that matches the piece. Do not call a plated piece gold filled, because gold filled has a legal minimum. If a supplier cannot confirm the construction, describe the piece as gold plated until you have proof.

How should customers care for gold plated and gold filled jewelry?

Keep it away from perfume, lotion and chlorine. Remove it before showering or exercise, wipe it dry after wearing and store it in a dry pouch.

FAQ

Is gold plated jewelry real gold? Yes, the surface is real karat gold, but the layer is very thin over a base metal.

What does 14K gold filled mean? 14K is the gold's purity. 1/20 means the gold layer is at least one twentieth of the piece's total weight.

Does gold plated jewelry tarnish? Gold itself does not tarnish. The base metal underneath can show through or discolor as the thin layer wears off.

Is oro laminado the same as gold filled? Not necessarily. Both usually bond a gold layer to a base metal, but oro laminado is not a regulated U.S. term, so the thickness and gold content depend on the manufacturer.

Is vermeil the same as gold plated? Vermeil is gold plating, but it must sit on sterling silver and be at least 2.5 microns thick, which is thicker than standard electroplate.
